When it comes to Facebook & online privacy, I am the person to turn to, I know everything there is to know…So I took the time to write this to help some of you out.
This week, Facebook got rid of the the setting “Who can look up your Timeline by name?” Also the past few months Graph Search started rolling out which basically means everything you’ve ever liked or commented, shared, can show up when other people type your name into the search bar, even if they are not your friend….such as employers, tinder stalkers, real life stalkers, exes, the government, Miley, Bruce Jenner, your parents, anyone that knows your name, etc…
Don’t get angry, take a deep breath and calm down, if you take the time to research and understand things (just like everything else in life) you will be ok.
The internet, not just Facebook, archives everything you’ve ever done…You can delete your profile, not use your real/full name, not share things, etc all you want…But the only way to actually keep yourself hidden on the internet, is to never have touched a computer. It’s the world we live in, get over it. So what should you do?
1 – Stop Using HASHTAGS (Instagram, Facebook) that have no purpose. Stop it, STOP. #Doing #this #is #stupid. Hashtagging #food when you post a picture of your food is stupid, hashtagging a brand or the restaurant is a better idea, if you are trying to get exposure. Hashtags show up in public searches… Otherwise, just stop.
2 – Before you like comment or post on things online, check to see if the original poster shared it publicly. I just did a quick browse through my friends list and MOST of you share things publicly and I don’t even think you know that you are…globe icon = public. Also, stop commenting, liking, tagging things on fan pages and stop using the share button on other peoples posts. I won’t be commenting or liking things that you post if they are public.
3 – Check your activity log. This is the only way to know which of your likes are public and which aren’t (Go to your profile, then click “Activity Log.”) You’ll see a history of every status update, photo, and shared item you’ve liked, along with an icon that’ll tell you whether it’s public or shared only with friends. To make past posts private, go to your account settings, under privacy and click on the limit the audience of your past posts and set to friends only.
4 – Don’t tag your friends on public posts or other people’s pages or posts on instagram and facebook. Ask friends and others to remove anything they may have shared about you if you don’t want it online…
5 – Share each post with the people you want to be able to see it. You control this every time you post.
I hope this helps!
